RIGA - The Constitution provides the opportunity to develop Latvia as a strong and happy state, President Raimonds Vejonis said on the anniversary of the adoption of the Constitution of the Republic of Latvia.
As LETA was told at the president’s office, Vejonis noted that the Latvian Constitutional Assembly, the first elected legislative body of independent Latvia, adopted Satversme, the constitution, on February 15, 1922. On behalf of its authors, then President Janis Cakste voiced hope that the Constitution would make Latvia happy and strong.
“Today, in the first year of Latvia’s second century, we can be confident that the Constitution provides the opportunity to develop our Latvia as a strong and happy state,” the president said.
He indicated that a better future will always depend on people themselves, their competence, democracy skills and faith in Latvia. “Every one of us has to uphold the Constitution’s values as our own and be ready to defend the Constitution in big as well small matters”.
