RIGA - The adoption of the budget showed that the coalition has a 52-vote majority in Parliament, Prime Minister Evika Silina (New Unity) said in an interview with TV3 on Wednesday, assessing the stability of the coalition she leads.
Silina said that now, after the adoption of the budget, she will talk to the parties about what they saw as the most important things to be done in the remaining time before the parliamentary elections.
The talks would be about understanding the parties' "inner feelings", said the politician, who would like to discuss what are the things that have "turned up the temperature" in the coalition, which has led some to want to align themselves more often with the opposition in their votes.
Silina once again urged the parties to "take a breath" and see whether they would be able to work together and keep the government stable in the turbulent period leading up to the elections, in the face of different political influences.
Asked how to react to the breaches of the coalition agreement, Silina said only that it was natural that in the run-up to the elections parties would try to position themselves and show how they differ from others. It cannot be denied that major disagreements shake the stability of the government.
At the same time, Silina stressed that none of the coalition partners had expressed no confidence in the other and no minister has fallen. However, she does not see any room for expanding the coalition at the moment.
As reported, the work of the coalition since the beginning of autumn has been accompanied by inter-party squabbles and differing views on key issues, raising questions about the ability of the Silina-led government to continue constructive work.
