Businessman and councilor from Ludza shot dead in Rezekne

RIGA - Andris Lubka, a local businessman and member of the Ludza town council was shot down in the eastern Latvian city of Rezekne on Friday, authorities informed.

Lubka has been elected to the Ludza town council on the Greens/Farmers ticket.

Ludza Mayor Edgars Mekss confirmed to LETA that information about Lubka's death has been received from the police.

State Police chief Armands Ruks, who currently is outside Latvia, confirmed to LETA that a murder has been committed in Rezekne. He indicated that all possible measures are being taken to detain everyone involved in the crime. There is some clarity about the circumstances in which the murder was committed but its motives are being investigated. 

Representatives of the Emergency Medical Service told LETA that at 13:57 on Friday paramedics were called to the scene of an incident in Rezkne. As the ambulance crew arrived at the scene, they found a person who had apparently died from injuries.

The ambulance service did not specify the circumstances in which the deceased had sustained the fatal injuries.

Meanwhile, eyewitnesses in Rezekne reported hearing noises of a shootout coming from a shopping center.

According to information available at Firmas.lv, Lubka, 60, owns Luseni company in Rezekne.
