RIGA - Foreign Minister Baiba Braze has joined the New Unity party, she told TV3 this morning.

She explained that until this decision, she had to go through a serious reflection process, to understand what it means to work in the government. Braze was pleased with the support she received in the Saeima, both from the coalition and the opposition.

Braze believes in the party system, in parties as democratic institutions in Latvia, so in her opinion, if you want to be part of the democratic system, you have to strengthen the parties.

In her opinion, the pro-European parties in Latvia are similar, they are not ideologically very different, but New Unity is more familiar to Braze. She is aware that the New Unity is currently embroiled in a series of scandals and she is convinced that the party has to deal with the situations in an open way.

"My political path is only at the beginning. It was a big decision," the Minister summed up.

"Braze is a competent, strong professional who is respected internationally. She also inspires a new generation of voters. We are therefore confident that together with New Unity, future leaders of European politics are growing up and will make a name for themselves in the coming years," said Signe Jantone, Secretary General of Unity party, adding that the political party is "on a dynamic growth trajectory".

According to New Unity spokesperson Anna Udre, the Unity secretary general of apprecites the fact that new members from Riga and Latvia's regions have joined the party lately, and several Latvian citizens abroad are also showing interest in joining the party.

"This shows that our political course is modern, credible, and that we have a real and lasting influence that brings positive and modern change to society," Jantone said.
