RIGA - The repatriation of the bodies of three mountain climbers, who died in Alaska, from the U.S. to Latvia has been completed, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) told LETA.
The repatriation process was organized by Latvian insurers in cooperation with partner companies in the U.S. The MFA emphasizes that the repatriation process was carried out in accordance with U.S. regulations and procedures.
As reported, at the end of May, three climbers from Latvia - Inese Puceka, Vija Olte, and Renars Kunigs-Salaks - died during an attempt to scale Denali, North America’s highest mountain. Another member of the expedition, Martins Bilzens, was taken to a hospital in Anchorage in serious condition. Meanwhile, the other three expedition members were evacuated from the mountain with the help of rescuers. Two of them were diagnosed with frostbite.
According to the US National Park Service, the fall occurred near Denali Pass, at about 18,200 feet (5,547 meters).
According to information provided by the Latvian Embassy in the U.S., on the night of June 4, all three bodies were brought down from Mount Denali.
