VILNIUS - Lithuanian prosecutors on Tuesday decided to bring suspicions to the Lithuanian Basketball Federation for suspected abuse of powers, fraud and document forgery during EuroBasket 2011.
According to the press release, the suspicions were brought after the federation used nearly 793,000 euros received from the Panevezys City Municipality’s budget possibly by fraud.

On Monday, suspicions were brought against the federation’s former secretary general, other employees of the federation, former Panevezys mayor, his former assistant and two employees of the municipality.
The Panevezys bureau of the Special Investigation Service opened the probe back in May of 2012, scrutinizing the signing of a 2.5 million litas (EUR 725,000) contract between the Panevezys City Municipality and the Lithuanian Basketball Federation on the organization of EuroBasket 2011 matches and basketball promotion program in the city.

The investigation is headed by the Organized Crime and Corruption Division of the Panevezys Prosecutor’s Office.
The investigation including more than 50 volumes of materials should be closed shortly before a procedural decision on handing the case to court is made.
