Baltic Assembly denounces plans to hold illegal referenda in occupied Ukrainian territories

RIGA - Plans to organize illegal referenda in occupied Ukrainian territories must be strongly denounced, the Presidium of the Baltic Assembly said in statement.

LETA was told at the Saeima press office that the Baltic Assembly is calling on the international community not to recognize the results of the referenda Russia is illegally organizing in occupied Ukrainian territories and the Russian passports issued there. 

In the statement, the Baltic Assembly denounces the human rights violations committed by Russia against Ukrainian POWs and the violent suppression of antiwar protests in Russia.

The Presidium of the Baltic Assembly urges parliaments and international organizations to take urgent action to make Russia comply with international law and respect human rights of Ukraine's defenders captured by Russians. 

The Presidium of the Baltic Assembly urges Russia to acknowledge and respect many Russians' unwillingness to participate in the meaningless war which has already claimed the lives of countless Ukrainians and Russians and to admit Russia's defeat in Ukraine. 

The Baltic Assembly is a consultative cooperation organization of the parliaments of the three Baltic states, which discusses issues of mutual interest.
