It was on 15 December 1986, when I visited Latvia for the first time in my life. One month earlier, I had arrived as a young Attaché at the Austrian Embassy to Moscow, at that time capital of the Soviet Union, as my first posting abroad. The winter 1986/1987 was still a very hard one. I remember the trip to Jurmala, with heavy snow at the beach, with pictures showing me in my black fur coat, amid a snow flurry.
