Around 6,000 education employees from 184 schools in Riga to join teachers' strike

RIGA - Around 6,000 education employees from 184 schools in Riga are preparing to join the looming teachers' strike on Monday, LETA was told at the city council.

Since the number of strike participants differs across education institutions and more people are registering for the strike, from September 19 the teaching process in the affected schools and kindergartens will be ensured as far as possible. 

Each school and kindergarten will inform students and parents on the changes expected in the education process. 

According to information provided by school administrations, around 4,000 employees from 87 of Riga's 101 comprehensive schools will be taking part in the strike. Teachers from 37 schools will be striking from one to three days, in eight schools the strike might continue for a week and 42 schools have not specified any term. 

Out of Riga's 146 kindergartens, 97 kindergartens with 2,300 employees, as well as  teachers of preschool groups in seven schools,  are also going on strike Monday. 

As reported, the Council of the Latvian Trade Union of Education and Science Employees (LIZDA) on Thursday did not call of a strike of Latvia's teachers which is due to begin next Monday.
