RIGA - Today, the first day of the 2019-2020 school year, about 215,000 schoolchildren went to school in Latvia, according to the Education and Science Ministry's estimates.
Although the exact number of schoolchildren will be known only in the second half of September, when the Education and Science Ministry will receive and compile data provided by municipalities, the ministry explained that the number of schoolchildren this year does not differ significantly from last year's figure. According to the ministry's current data, the number of schoolchildren who went to school for the first time today is 20,000 - also at the level of the previous year.
Compared to 2018, the number of schools in Latvia has decreased as 14 schools have been liquidated since last year, and more than a dozen schools have been merged.
Also this month, teachers' minimum monthly salary will increase to EUR 750.
