RIGA - So far, 16 people in Latvia have officially recovered from Covid-19, Jurijs Perevoscikovs, head of the Infectious Disease Risk Analysis and Prevention Department at the Center for Disease Prevention and Control, informed at a news conference Monday.
Patients who have been diagnosed with Covid-19 are only allowed to end their quarantine and resume daily activities only on their doctor's permission. A patient is considered healthy if their clinical symptoms have disappeared and two consecutive Covid-19 tests are negative.
Perevoscikovs said the two tests came back negative for 16 out of 75 patients who have been tested after overcoming the disease, confirming that these people have recovered and are no longer infectious.
"A patient can recover physically, and the symptoms may disappear, but to allow the patient to go about their daily life and close the sick-leave certificate, it is necessary to make sure the patient has really recovered, because patients can still remain infectious for up to two weeks after recovering," the expert said.
Meanwhile, for 29 of the 75 recovered patients, the first Covid-19 test has been negative, but they still have to be tested repeatedly to confirm their recovery.
In 30 other cases, patients whose symptoms have disappeared are still testing positive for the coronavirus.
In 111 confirmed Covid-19 cases, patients have been diagnosed more than 14 days before. This means that control tests have not been conducted on 36 patients. These patients are either still showing symptoms or their family practitioners have not yet arranged the testing, Perevoscikovs said.
Meanwhile, the Center for Disease Prevention and Control is monitoring 2,500 contacts, or people who are at risk of falling ill with Covid-19 after contacts with infected people.
As reported, with nine more people testing positive for the novel coronavirus in the past 24 hours, the total number of Covid-19 cases in Latvia has grown to 542, according to information released by the Center for Disease Prevention and Control.
Altogether, 773 people were tested for Covid-19 during the last 24 hours. The total number of Covid-19 tests conducted so far reached 21,453.
Of the 44 Covid-19 patients that are being treated in hospital, 39 are cases of moderate severity and five are severe cases, which means the patients have pneumonia and need ventilation.
As the Health Ministry's chief infectious diseases specialist Uga Dumpis said earlier, compared to other countries hit with a Covid-19 pandemic, Latvia looks quite good.
He pointed out that, compared to other countries, ''people in Latvia are allowed to move relatively freely, and our figures are quite good when compared to pandemics in other countries''.
