RIGA - The security of Latvia's energy supply will not be affected by Ukraine's decision to discontinue Russian gas transit to Europe, LETA was told at the Climate and Energy Ministry.

The ministry noted that Latvia, just like Lithuania and Estonia, receives a significant portion of the gas needed for consumption from the Incukalns underground gas storage facility and liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminals.

The impact on the gas price is minimal, with the price ranging from EUR 48 to EUR 51 per megawatt hour (MW), according to representatives of the Climate and Energy Ministry.

According to information from the European Commission, the discontinuation of Russian gas transit via Ukraine has left no major impact on the security of supply in European Union countries or Ukraine.

The EU Commission also said that Europe's capacities are sufficient to ensure additional gas flows from the West to the East, the Climate and Energy Ministry said.

As reported, Ukraine on January 1 halted the flows of Russian gas through its territory as a five-year contract between Ukraine's Naftogaz and Russia's Gazprom expired, the Ukrainian Energy Ministry informed.

The ministry said that the decision not to extend the contract has been taken in national security interests and that international partners have been informed in advance.
