U.S. Ambassador to Latvia John Carwile’s visit to Rēzekne, March 22-23

U.S. Ambassador to Latvia John Carwile paid a two-day visit to Rezekne on March 22-23 affirm U.S. support for Latvia, build on longstanding U.S.-Rezekne ties, and thank the community for its generous support for the people of Ukraine.

Ambassador Carwile: “The effects of Putin’s war of choice are not restricted to Ukraine and Russia.  This has ripple effects around the world and calls into question security and prosperity for all of us, on issues ranging from self-governance to human rights to energy and food security.  I want to affirm to the people of Rezekne that the United States and our NATO Allies are committed to defending every square inch of NATO territory.  This commitment is a sacred obligation, and Latvians have seen NATO reinforce its presence in Latvia in recent weeks as part of that commitment.”    

During his visit, Ambassador Carwile met with Rezekne Vice Mayor Aleksejs Stecs, and talked with community members organizing local efforts to help Ukrainian refugees.  He toured the Latgale Embassy GORS performing arts center, which has partnered with the Embassy on past cultural performances by American artists.  The Ambassador also met with Rector Iveta Mietule at the​​Rezekne Technology Academy, which has hosted multiple American exchange program participants and is participating in a new State Department program to improve the teaching of media literacy.  In addition, the Ambassador toured the New Fuels company, which helps provide clean, renewable energy and contributes to Latvia’s energy independence.  

Ambassador Carwile:  “I am grateful for the warm hospitality I experienced in Rezekne, and for the opportunity to meet and listen to local residents.  I am encouraged to see so many people in Rezekne come together in support of the Ukrainian people—there is a lot of generosity in this community.  We must remain united as Allies to ensure our security and help Ukrainians defend their country.”
