RIGA - The state secretaries of the Foreign Ministries of the Baltic and Nordic countries (NB8) agreed to strengthen sanctions against Russia and to continue comprehensive support to Ukraine, the Latvian Foreign Ministry informed LETA.

State Secretary of the Latvian Foreign Ministry Andzejs Vilumsons attended the meeting of the state secretaries of the Foreign Ministries of the Baltic and Nordic countries (NB8) in Stockholm on Thursday and Friday.

The aim was to discuss regional security issues, including resilience to hybrid attacks, comprehensive support to Ukraine, and strengthening sanctions to curb Russian aggression.

Vilumsons welcomed the willingness of the countries in the region to strengthen coordination with each other in the face of current security challenges, and their readiness to deepen security cooperation and assistance to Ukraine.

He stressed that Baltic-Nordic coordination plays an important role in many practical initiatives, which are often supported by other like-minded countries and promoted more widely in the European Union (EU) and NATO formats. One illustrative example, according to Vilumsons, is the work on Russia's "shadow fleet" on the EU sanctions list, where the countries of the region are making a significant contribution.

In 2024, Nordic-Baltic cooperation in foreign affairs will be coordinated by Sweden, which has set as its priorities the strengthening of cooperation in security policy, as well as the promotion of regional and global support for Ukraine. In 2025, Denmark will take over the coordination of the Nordic-Baltic format.
