RIGA - Former defense minister Andris Spruds (Progressives) resigned from his post, because then-prime minister Evika Silina (New Unity) and New Unity tried to exploit the drone incident for political gain, said Andris Suvajevs, the Progressives' candidate for prime minister, in an interview with LETA podcast "Politicians! What Was That All About?!".

According to Suvajevs, it became clear in the morning after the drone incident that New Unity wanted to use the situation to its political advantage. He believes that such a security incident should not have become a tool in a political battle.

Suvajevs pointed out that responsibility for what happened must be assessed not only at the level of the Ministry of Defense, but also at the Ministry of the Interior and the Crisis Management Center. In his view, following the incident, the mistakes made should have been analyzed and conclusions drawn, rather than immediately demanding the minister’s resignation.
