TALLINN – Due to difficult weather conditions and extensive power outages caused by the snowstorm that hit Estonia on Monday, schools and kindergartens in rural areas of Saaremaa will be closed on Tuesday.

On Monday, seven educational institutions on Estonia's largest island were closed for the same reason.

On Monday morning, the municipality's crisis committee examined the state of play as regards power cuts in Saaremaa with representatives of distribution grid company Elektrilevi. Elektrilevi informed that strong winds and snowfall have caused further outages and it will take at least 48 hours to repair all the faults. The grid company was about to deploy additional teams of workers and drones to Saaremaa from the mainland.

In cooperation with partners, the crisis committee has had power generators dispatched to different regions of the island to ensure the supply of electricity to care homes and the possibility for people to charge their phones. Water company Kuressaare Veevark of the island capital Kuressaare is temporarily in charge of the operation of public water supply in the Karla, Somera, Mustjala and Kaali-Koljala areas.

On Monday, Kihelkonna school, Karla kindergarten and basic school, Kahtla kindergarten and basic school, the kindergarten branch of Leisi school at Parsama, Lumanda kindergarten and basic school, Mustjala kindergarten and basic school and Kaali school were closed due to power outages.
