RIGA - The Speaker of the Saeima Daiga Mierina (Greens/Farmers) has confirmed that Armenia can count on Latvia's support on its path towards the European Union, the Speaker's office informed LETA.
Mierina, in a meeting with Armenian National Assembly President Alen Simonyan, said that parliamentary cooperation between the Baltic-Nordic region (NB8) and Armenia should be strengthened. It is important that the South Caucasus region enjoys security and stability, Mierina said.
Simonyan thanked Latvia for organizing the NB8 visit to Armenia, noting that this is a historic moment, which confirms Armenia's readiness to be part of the European community. He also assured that Armenia is on its way to conclude a peace agreement with Azerbaijan.
The President of the Armenian National Assembly said that Armenia wants to free itself from Russian influence and that a possible Russian attack on Armenia should be seen as an attack on Europe and its values.
Mierina said that Latvia will support Armenia in its democratic reform process and on its path towards the European Union.
Mierina is in Armenia until January 25 together with other speakers of the Baltic and Nordic parliaments. The visit will focus on Armenia's closer integration with Europe and the reform process.
