RIGA - In a conversation with Major General Kaspars Pudans, Latvia's new Chief of Defense, President Edgars Rinkevics stressed the significance of the National Armed Forces' (NAF) readiness as an encouragement to the public and a signal of deterrence to Russia.
Today's conversation was the first bilateral meeting between the two officials since Major General Pudans assumed office as NAF Commander.
"Being clearly aware that Russia poses a long-term threat to Euro-Atlantic security, the primary task is the development of the NAF and capabilities for effective deterrence and defense, as well as the readiness to use these forces and capabilities and to anticipate future challenges," the president said during the meeting.
Rinkevics also noted the importance of the NAF's public reputation, the strengthening of which largely relies on communication and raising awareness, promoting the increasing involvement of the public in the security and defense of the country.
