RIGA - Ukraine and Moldova should be provided with the necessary support in the implementation of the European Union (EU) integration reforms, Latvian President Edgars Rinkevics said during a meeting with Luxembourg's Foreign Minister Xavier Bettel at Riga Castle on Tuesday.
As the president's adviser Martins Dregeris told LETA, the talks between Rinkevics and Bettel focused on bilateral cooperation, cooperation in the EU and NATO, Russia's war of aggression against Ukraine and the situation in the Middle East.
In the conversation, Rinkevics noted that the Latvian community of around 600 people who live in Luxembourg, plays an important role in preserving the language and culture, as well as in strengthening closer relations between the two countries. The Latvian president welcomed the Baltic-Benelux cooperation format (Baltic states and Belgium, the Netherlands and Luxembourg), and the fact that the agreement on the recognition of higher education diplomas between the countries entered into force on May 1.
The officials also discussed the recent NATO summit in Washington at which the Allies agreed to further strengthen deterrence and defense, as well as long-term support to Ukraine. Rinkevics underlined the need to further promote global partners' support to Ukraine's peace initiative and the Ukraine-led peace summit process.
While discussing the next EU institutional cycle, the Latvian president outlined Latvia's priorities: security, economy and finance, human well-being, climate and energy, as well as EU enlargement and adaptation.
