RIGA - Due to Russia's war in Ukraine, Riga has suspended its membership in the New Hanseatic League (Die Hanse), which also includes several Russian cities, LETA was informed by the Riga City Council's Communications Department.

On March 5 this year, the New Hanseatic League issued a statement that 17 cities in Russia and two in Belarus will continue to be part of this association. In view of Russia's unprecedented aggression against Ukraine and its invasion of a sovereign state, in brutal violation of international law, Riga is joining other Latvian cities and is suspending its membership in the association until further notice.

The Latvian city of Cesis announced the suspension of its membership in the New Hanseatic League on Thursday.
