Refugees can receive Latvian benefits even if they have left the country - TV report

A legislative loophole provides immigrants who have been awarded asylum in Latvia their subsistence benefits even if they leave the country, the evening news programme of LNT commercial TV channel has relayed. Immigrants no longer qualify for the benefits if they have found jobs paying more than the minimum wage, if they are convicted and sentenced to a term in prison, or if they are caught lying about their income and have lost refugee status. The present requirements, however, permit immigrants to leave the country and continue to receive benefits in their bank accounts...
