RIGA - Prices of next heating season in the Baltic states will depend on sanctions against Belarus that is one of the largest timber biomass suppliers to the Baltic states, said international biomass pool Baltpool representatives.

Woodchip has been one of the most popular biomass products in the past two heating seasons. Baltpool representatives said that buyers are demanding highest quality woodchip.

"This has resulted in a significant rise of imports of this product from Belarus. If the recent events in Belarus will result in import restrictions, opportunities to supply highest quality woodchip for biomass in Lithuania and Latvia will also be restricted," Baltpool representatives said.

According to Baltpool data, biomass import volumes have not yet dropped and exceeded 250,000 tons in the first quarter of 2021.
