Liberals and Conservatives form parliament’s opposition

VILNIUS - The Seimas' groups of the Liberals' Movement and the Homeland Union-Lithuanian Christian Democrats (TS-LKD) will be working as independent political forces in the opposition, the groups announced Tuesday at parliament.

In their political declaration the Liberals' Movement noted that they do not approve of the 16th Government's program. The group will be working in the opposition for the following reasons: they do not approve of fiscal policy aiming to increase public spending and introduce tax exemptions, as well as of eliminating private institutions that ensure competitiveness and quality service from the sectors of education and health.

"We feel responsibility and obligation to those creating, working, free and responsible in the country. We will consistently defend their rights and interests as we see no chance of compromises in this respect. Therefore, we have decided to work in the Seimas as an independence political force in the opposition," said Elder of the Liberal's Group at the Seimas Eligijus Masiulis.

Masiulis also said that their group remains open for cooperation opportunities with other non-ruling political forces.

As reported, Seimas' group of the Homeland Union-Lithuanian Christian Democrats (TS-LD) has become the opposition group at parliament. Former Prime Minister Andrius Kubilius has been elected the Elder of the TS-LKD group, Jurgis Razma - his first deputy, Vince Vaidevute Margeviciene and Valentinas Stundys - deputies.
