RIGA - The NATO Multinational Combat Brigade in Latvia is a strong signal of our deterrence capabilities, underlined Prime Minister Evika Silina (New Unity), who met with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte on Thursday.
As Edite Matusevica, the Prime Minister's press secretary, informed LETA, during the meeting Silina stressed that Latvia continues to invest in the defense sector, as well as to provide long-term support to Ukraine.
During the meeting, the Prime Minister and the NATO Secretary General discussed the strengthening of security and defense between Latvia and NATO, support to Ukraine, as well as cooperation between the European Union and NATO.
"Latvia's role in NATO has become more important in the 20 years since Latvia joined the Alliance. [...] With our expected long-term support to Ukraine and our commitment to increase our defense investments, we can be a role model for other European countries. Together with NATO, we will continue to work on modernizing our defense infrastructure and strengthening our defense and deterrence capabilities," said Silina.
On Thursday, the new NATO Secretary General Rutte paid his first visit to Latvia. He visited the NATO Multinational Brigade exercise Resolute Warrior 2024 at the Adazi military base.
