Monaco Baltic States Association President in Baku: New Regional Medical Congress Planned for Tbilisi

BAKU — An important meeting between Professor Franco Borruto and Professor Islam Magalov in Baku has opened a new chapter in medical cooperation between Azerbaijan, Georgia, Monaco, the Baltic states and the wider region.

Professor Franco Borruto, gynecologist and health-policy consultant from Monaco and President of the Monaco Baltic States Association, met Professor Islam Magalov, one of Azerbaijan’s leading specialists in obstetrics and gynecology, to discuss the development of regional cooperation in gynecologic oncology, cervical cancer prevention and HPV-related diseases.

The meeting also provided an opportunity to discuss a major new initiative: a regional medical congress dedicated to gynecologic oncology, HPV prevention and women’s health, to be held in Tbilisi under the aegis of the Georgian Society of Gynecologic Oncology.

The congress is intended to bring together specialists and experts from the Caucasus, Central Asia and the Baltic region, creating a platform for scientific exchange and cooperation across geographical boundaries.

For Professor Borruto, the initiative is part of a broader vision developed through his longstanding international medical and institutional activities. His work on cervical cancer prevention, HPV vaccination and women’s health has increasingly been combined with efforts to establish international scientific networks.

Tbilisi has been chosen as the host city because Georgia occupies a unique geographical and strategic position between Europe and Asia. The Georgian Society of Gynecologic Oncology will provide the scientific and professional framework for the meeting, while the initiative is expected to involve experts and institutions from several countries.

The meeting in Baku with Professor Magalov was particularly significant in this context. Azerbaijan is an important regional partner, with an expanding medical and scientific community and growing attention to HPV prevention and cervical cancer.

The proposed congress will seek to move beyond traditional national boundaries. Azerbaijan and Georgia would form an important Caucasus axis, while participation from Central Asian countries and the Baltic states would extend the initiative into a wider international network.

Among the subjects expected to be addressed are HPV vaccination, cervical cancer screening, HPV genotyping, early diagnosis, management of cervical precancerous lesions, gynecologic oncology and new approaches to prevention.

The initiative also reflects the increasingly important role of medical diplomacy — using scientific and professional cooperation to establish lasting relationships between countries.

For Monaco, the project represents another opportunity to contribute its experience and international connections to a field of global public-health importance. Through the Monaco Baltic States Association, Professor Borruto has developed longstanding relationships in the Baltic region, creating the possibility of connecting Northern European expertise with emerging scientific networks in the Caucasus and Central Asia.

The Baku meeting therefore represents more than an exchange between two distinguished physicians. It marks the beginning of a broader regional initiative, with Tbilisi identified as the venue for the forthcoming congress under the aegis of the Georgian Society of Gynecologic Oncology.

The ambition is clear: to create a permanent scientific bridge linking the Caucasus, Central Asia, the Baltic states and Monaco, with a shared focus on preventing cancer, improving women’s health and strengthening international medical cooperation.

The first step has been taken in Baku. The next meeting will take place in Tbilisi.
