RIGA - Environment Protection and Regional Development Minister Juris Puce (For Development) will meet with Riga Mayor Olegs Burovs (Honor to Serve Riga) on September 4 to discuss the situation in Riga in relation to the possible crisis in waste management in the Latvian capital, said Puce's representative Agnese Varpina.

"Riga might face an emergency situation in waste management after September 15, therefore, during a meeting with the Riga mayor, I want to make sure that the local government is getting ready for it, and a crisis management plan has been developed to ensure waste collection and management," said Puce.

As reported, on August 29, Puce demanded an explanation from Burovs about the situation in the waste management sector in the Latvian capital. At the time when the Riga City Council has not adopted the regulations, there have been media reports that the Competition Council might suspend public-private partnership agreement signed for a period of 20 years between the Riga City Council and Tiriga waste management company.
