VILNIUS – Lithuanian Foreign Minister Gabrielius Landsbergis had a phone conversation with US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo on Thursday and they discussed bilateral cooperation.

"The US has been and will remain one of the key strategic partners of Lithuania. We are grateful to this state's administration for its support to Lithuania and hope that the region will continue receiving attention and we will act together in the future to ensure our common interests in the region," Landsbergis was quoted as saying in a statement released by the Foreign Ministry.

He also thanked Pompeo for his personal contribution to the development of bilateral relations, ensuring security in the Baltic Sea region, and also invited the US to continue bolstering its military presence in Lithuania and cooperation within NATO.

Landsbergis also reiterated Lithuania's commitment to allocating 2 percent of its GDP for the country's defense.

The ministry said Pompeo assured Landsbergis that Lithuania and the US would continue and strengthen their active cooperation.

Landsbergis, the ministry said, also asked for the United States' support regarding the Astravyets nuclear power plans and assured that the Lithuanian government is making every effort to prevent power from the facility from entering the Lithuanian market.

Landsbergis and Pompeo's conversation was held amid unrest at the Capitol as the US Congress certified the victory of President-elect Joe Biden.
