RIGA - Latvian Transport Minister Talis Linkaits (New Conservative Party) during a meeting with French Transport Minister Jean-Baptiste Djebbari on Monday called on the European Union (EU) to develop a common approach to Covid-19 restrictions on the transport sector.

Linkaits said during the meeting that although the EU has adopted various recommendations on coordinated measures, member states are still taking decisions singlehandedly, which has a direct impact on the transport system's operations.

The meeting of the two transport ministers dealt with several EU-wide transport-related issues, including the development of alternative fuels for all modes of transport and the  promotion of the transition to cleaner transport, as well as road traffic safety amid developing micro-mobility in cities.

During the meeting, Djebbari presented France's priorities as the presidency of the Council of the EU, with the focus on decarbonization and innovation.

For his part, Linkaits voiced hope that pragmatic and balanced decisions will be taken under the leadership of the French presidency.
