Latvia records highest Covid-19 death rate in EU and EEA

RIGA - Latvia recorded the highest Covid-19 death rate in the European Union and the European Economic Area last week, according to the European Center for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC).

In the past two weeks, October 18 to 31, Latvia's Covid-19 mortality rate increased to 244.8 deaths per one million population.

Latvia is followed by Bulgaria with 242.7 and Romania with 230.3 deaths per million residents.

In the EU and EEA, the average Covid-19 death rate was 27.2 per million population.

Covid-19 death rates in Lithuania and Estonia also increased significantly, to 78.4 deaths per million population in Lithuania and to 82 deaths per million population in Estonia.

Latvia also had the EU and EEA's highest cumulative number of Covid-19 cases per 100,000 population last two weeks - 1,757.3 cases. However, this week Estonia recorded the highest cumulative number of Covid-19 cases in the EU and EEA - yesterday it rose to 1,808.1 cases per 100,000 residents, while in Latvia it decreased to 1,652.8 cases per 100,000 population. In Lithuania, the cumulative two-week number of Covid-19 cases decreased to 1,397.2 per 100,000 population yesterday.

Besides the Baltic countries, the only two other countries where the number of Covid-19 cases per 100,000 population exceeds 1,000 cases are Slovenia and Croatia. Across the EU and EEA, Covid-19 incidence averaged at 306.2 cases per 100,000 population in the last two weeks.
