Klaipeda Port in 2025: Significant Cargo Growth, New Records, and Strengthening Regional Position

Klaipeda Port started the year 2025 confidently, recording significant growth in cargo handling, with some cargo types reaching record-breaking volumes. The port’s increasing market share among Baltic Sea ports reflects its strengthening position in the region.

Cargo Handling in Klaipeda Port – Key Figures, Q1 2025

In the first quarter of this year, Klaipeda Port handled 15% or nearly 1.3 million tons more cargo than during the same period last year. A total of nearly 10 million tons of cargo was handled. The most significant driver of this positive trend was containerized cargo, which increased by 33% (+723 thousand tons) – the highest quarterly result in the port's container segment history. Another record was set in liquefied natural gas (LNG) handling, which grew by 100 thousand tons or 18%.

There was also significant growth in construction materials and minerals (+62% or 228 thousand tons), bulk fertilizers (+92% or 162 thousand tons), and ro-ro cargo (vehicles transported by ferry) (+7% or 109 thousand tons). Oil product handling also increased by 7% or 66 thousand tons.

On the downside, agricultural product handling fell by 19% (–275 thousand tons), forestry products declined by 10% (–21 thousand tons), and liquid fertilizers dropped by 81% or 92 thousand tons.

In Q1 2025, 62% of cargo entered Klaipeda Port by road, 28% by rail, and the rest by sea or pipeline (for LNG cargo).

During the first quarter, ship repair companies operating in Klaipeda Port repaired 12 vessels.

Top 5 Cargo Types in Klaipeda Port, Q1 2025

The total cargo volume in Baltic States ports grew by 4% or 840 thousand tons in Q1 2025. Klaipeda Port’s market share among Baltic ports also increased – by 4 percentage points, now reaching almost 41%. Meanwhile, Riga Port’s share fell by nearly 2 percentage points to 18.3%, and Tallinn Port’s share decreased by about 0.6 percentage points to 14%.

The largest decline in tonnage occurred in Latvia’s biggest port – Riga – where cargo volumes fell by almost 360 thousand tons or 8% compared to the same period last year. The most notable drops were in grain, containerized cargo, and metals. Riga handled a total of around 4.4 million tons in Q1 2025.

In Liepaja, another Latvian port, the decline was similar – down 350 thousand tons or 18%, with reduced volumes of grain, timber, and ro-ro cargo. A total of 1.6 million tons was handled there.

Ventspils was the only Latvian port to record positive growth in Q1 2025. Increased handling of oil products and ro-ro cargo led to a 1% rise in throughput – an increase of 35 thousand tons, with a total of almost 2.4 million tons handled.
