Having become Lithuania's Capital of Culture in 2026, Kedainiai has entered the most important and intensive phase of its cultural program this summer. Over the coming months, the city and the surrounding district will host the most prominent events of the year, bringing together local communities, visitors from across Lithuania, and guests from abroad.
Today, Kedainiai is emerging as one of Lithuania's most attractive cultural tourism destinations. The growing number of visitors demonstrates that increasingly more people are choosing this central Lithuanian city for weekend getaways and short holidays. Kedainiai is renowned for its distinctive Old Town, multicultural heritage, and high-quality cultural offerings.
"The greatest achievement of the Capital of Culture project is the people. We are delighted to see how actively communities throughout the Kedainiai district are participating in the events. Culture is becoming a common meeting point that strengthens people's connection to their region and to one another. At the same time, we are witnessing growing interest from visitors from other Lithuanian cities. Increasingly more people are choosing Kedainiai for their leisure time and weekend trips. This confirms that the city is becoming a place people choose not only to visit, but to truly experience," says Daiva Urboniene, Head of the "Kedainiai – Lithuania's Capital of Culture 2026" project and Director of the Kedainiai Cultural Centre.
The summer program features the international Czeslaw Milosz Festival, the Acoustic Accordion Summer Festival, and one of the city's most beloved traditions – the Green Cucumber Festival, which has become a true symbol of Kedainiai. This year, the festival aims to set an impressive record, with plans for visitors to consume as many as 50,000 cucumbers during the celebration.
The Capital of Culture program also embraces contemporary initiatives. Basanavicius Street Fest will take place on one of the city's main thoroughfares, while fans of alternative culture will gather for a garage band battle. Young creators and music enthusiasts will be invited to participate in the electronic music workshops "Signals." The project "Discover Art" will move into residential neighborhoods, bringing professional art into unexpected spaces and making culture more accessible in everyday life.
The summer cultural season will culminate in the traditional Kedainiai City Festival, one of the largest annual events in the region, attracting thousands of residents and visitors every year.
In 2026, Kedainiai invites people not only to attend events but also to enjoy a unique experience – the opportunity to discover one of Lithuania's most authentic historic cities at a time when culture becomes the central axis of public life.
