RIGA - It is important to find an optimal solution for the functioning of anti-corruption institutions in Ukraine, Foreign Minister Baiba Braze (New Unity) told LETA, commenting on Ukraine's decision to change the subordination of anti-corruption institutions.

The Minister stressed that a solution must be found to ensure the independent functioning of anti-corruption institutions, the investigation of corruption processes, and the transparency and openness of processes in Ukraine.

She noted that Latvia was in intensive contact with the Ukrainian side, European Union (EU) officials, other EU countries and Ukraine's supporters to ensure that "this unfortunate development does not have an impact on Ukraine's EU integration process".

Braze stressed that Latvia would continue to provide comprehensive support to Ukraine in its fight against Russia's war.

The AFP news agency reports that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said Thursday he had approved a draft bill guaranteeing the freedom of anti-corruption bodies, after nationwide protests over a new law that curbed their independence.

The change also raised concerns in the European Union, a key ally to Ukraine in its war against Russia, which has said reforms are essential for closer European integration.

Zelensky had promised on Wednesday he would propose a new bill on anti-graft agencies to parliament, a move the EU welcomed.

"I have just approved the text of a draft law that guarantees real strengthening of the rule of law in Ukraine, independence of anti-corruption bodies and reliable protection of the rule of law from any Russian influence or interference," Zelensky wrote on social media.

"It is important that we respect the position of all Ukrainians and are grateful to everyone who stands with Ukraine," he added.
