RIGA - In order to improve the demographic situation in Latvia, it is essential not only to increase child support, but also to improve the opportunities to combine family care with work, access to housing for young families and young professionals, as well as to reduce premature mortality and emigration, the Welfare Ministry emphasizes in a report that was presented at the Demographic Affairs Council's meeting on Tuesday.
The report states that a comprehensive approach is needed to create an environment that motivates people to attain their life goals and reconcile family, private and professional life.
The report proposes three lines of action. First is focusing on children, including measures to support childbirth and to improve families' living standards. Second is promoting quality living environment, and third - minimizing reasons for migration and encouraging remigration.
The report will now be submitted to the Cabinet of Ministers.
