Girl found dead in Riga suburb in June was raped and strangled to death; two suspects face life in prison

RIGA - Police have concluded the investigation into the murder of a 15-year-old girl this past summer in the Riga suburb of Bolderaja, and have determined that she was raped and then murdered, LETA was informed by the State Police.

According to an autopsy, the girl was strangled to death.

The State Police detained two men on suspicion of murdering a teenage girl (born 2005) in the Riga suburb of Bolderaja on June 20.

Police received a call at around 5:00 a.m. on the morning of June 18 from a fisherman, who found the body body floating in the Bullupe Canal in the Riga suburb of Bolderaja. When police arrived, they determined that the girl had died a violent death. 

Soon after, officers from the State Police's Riga Criminal Police were able to determine that two young men could be involved with the death - one born 1991, and the other in 1999. They were acquaintances of the girl. They were located and taken into custody later that day.

According to information obtained by police, a company of persons were using alcohol in Bolderaja the evening before the girl's body was found, and at around 10:00 p.m. that night the girl left with the suspects to an apartment.

The girl was then murdered in the apartment for a reason yet unknown to police. The men then carried her body to the Bullupe Canal, where they threw it in.

The detained men have had no previous run-in with the law.

A criminal process for murder has been launched. If convicted, the young men face life in prison.
