RIGA - Former Latvian Prime Minister Krisjanis Karins (New Unity) was at the top of the list of candidates for the post of NATO Deputy Secretary General, Latvian Television reports, citing unofficial information.

However, the post went to former North Macedonian Defense Minister Radmila Sekerinska. Karins had a good chance of being confirmed, but in the end, according to unofficial reports, the decision was probably made in favor of a woman for the post of Deputy Secretary-General, in line with the principle of gender equality.

LTV was unable to contact Karins on Tuesday.

Karins' name was once also mentioned in the context of the NATO Secretary General post, but the post went to Dutch politician Mark Rutte.
