BRUSSELS - The participants in the EU summit in Brussels have reached an agreement to prolong for six months the economic sanctions against Russia, Preben Aamann, a spokesperson of European Council President Donald Tusk, said on Twitter.

"Russia sanctions unanimously extended for another six months because of a lack of Minsk Agreements implementation," Aamann said on Twitter Thursday evening.

"The EU remains steadfast in its commitment to Ukraine's sovereignty & territorial integrity 5 years after Russia's illegal annexation of #Crimea & #Sevastopol," European Council spokesperson Virginie Battu said on Twitter.

A different source in Brussels earlier said the Council of the European Union was supposed to make an official decision on that matter next week.
