RIGA - It is important for the EU member states to reach an agreement on the next EU multiannual budget, and it should be even more ambitious due to Covid-19 crisis, the European Commission's Vice President Valdis Dombrovskis said in an interview with LETA.
He reminded that at present a Coronavirus Response Investment Initiative has been adopted on the level of the EU budget, the European Investment Bank and the European Investment Fund, providing EUR 37 billion for the purpose, while the overall EU support measure for overcoming Covid-19 crisis is estimated at EUR 93 billion.
At the same time, this is the last year of the previous EU multiannual budget, therefore it is not easy to find funds for the crisis.
"This brings us to an important issue on the next EU multiannual budget. As it is known, no agreement was reached on it in February, but it would be important to do it now. It is also important that the next budget is more ambitious and could provide support to the economic recovery after the pandemic is over," said Dombrovskis.
