TALLINN – The Estonian government is about to discuss a draft on Thursday that would add a regiment and a battery as new units within the structure of the country's defense forces.

The main goal of these changes is to simplify internal command and administrative processes within the defense forces and to more clearly define the composition and operational roles of structural units.

As part of the restructuring, the structure of the division will also be expanded to include an artillery regiment. The term "regiment" is a historically rooted designation for a unit larger than a battalion but focused on a single branch of arms -- unlike a brigade, which is multi-functional, the explanatory memorandum reads.
