Estonia: Reps vows to stand for direct presidential election if elected head of state

Speaking before the council of Estonia's Centre Party Saturday, MP Mailis Reps promised to push for direct presidential election if she was elected head of state. "I don't know why many Estonian politicians are scared of asking the people's opinion, but I'm not afraid of it," Reps said. "If I'm elected president I promise to initiate a constitutional amendment to give the Estonian people the right to elect the president in a direct vote. In this case people could elect the president directly already in five years' time."...
