RIGA - The election of Estonia’s new president, Ulle Madise, signifies stability for Baltic security and support for Ukraine, Una Aleksandra Berzina-Cerenkova, director of the Latvian Institute of International Affairs, told LETA.
Berzina-Cerenkova emphasized that the consensus among the Baltic states and the broader NB8 is certainly not threatened, and that Estonia will continue to be Latvia’s like-minded partner in NATO, the European Union (EU), and regional security - a view Madise also expressed.
Berzina-Cerenkova also cited Madise’s emphasis on the rule of law, the balance between security issues and human rights, and the recognition of social problems and the search for solutions as a significant positive aspect.
"This issue is relevant in all of our countries, and cooperation and the exchange of experiences in this regard will certainly deepen," emphasized Berzina-Cerenkova.
As reported, the Estonian Parliament today elected Chancellor of Justice Madise as the country's next president.
Madise, who was the only candidate, received 71 votes from MPs.
In October, Madise will succeed Alar Karis as head of state; Karis did not run for a second five-year term.
