RIGA - Latvian delegation to the fall plenary session of the NATO Parliamentary Assembly stressed the importance of the Allies' support for Ukraine against the Russian aggression and strengthening assistance to the war-torn country, as Saeima Press Service informed LETA.

During the session, delegates adopted five resolutions, including on supporting Ukraine until its victory. Latvian MPs stressed that comprehensive, effective assistance to Ukraine would not be possible without strengthening the Alliance itself, including in terms of military mobility, especially in the Baltic countries. Accelerated implementation of the Rail Baltica railroad project would be an important step in this respect, they also stressed.

During the NATO PA session, delegates discussed Euro-Atlantic security and the future of the armed forces, as well as continued support for Ukraine. They also discussed support for the Alliance's values, challenges posed by China, the strategic race in the Arctic, and risks posed by disinformation and the spread of propaganda.

During the session, delegates worked in five committees where reports were discussed and adopted. The committee reports deal with Russia's war in Ukraine, emphasize NATO support for Ukraine, and look into Ukraine's reforms toward NATO membership. Parliamentarians also discussed strategic partnerships with Asia-Pacific countries, security challenges in the Western Balkans, deterrence and civilian security, sexual violence in conflict zones, and water security as a possible weapon against allied forces.

The Latvian delegation to the NATO PA also met with Canadian Parliament members to discuss the presence of the Canadian Armed Forces in Latvia and to thank them for their contribution to Latvia's security.

The Latvian delegation to the NATO PA fall session was made up of the delegation's head Raimonds Bergmanis (United List), his deputy Ainars Latkovskis (New Unity), and permanent representatives Irma Kalnina (New Unity) and Liga Klavina (Greens/Farmers).

The NATO Parliamentary Assembly serves as the consultative interparliamentary organization for NATO. It consists of delegates from the parliaments of the 32 NATO member countries as well as from associate and partner countries.
