RIGA - Demonstration of preparedness of NATO forces is a powerful signal of deterrence, which was also confirmed by the recent Canadian-led NATO multinational brigade exercise in Latvia, Resolute Warrior 2024, President Edgars Rinkevics said at a meeting with Canadian Foreign Minister Melanie Joly at Riga Castle on Monday.
According to the president's advisor Martins Dregeris, during the meeting Rinkevics and Joly discussed bilateral cooperation between Latvia and Canada, particularly in defense and security, as well as key international developments.
Rinkevics said that he was very pleased with the Canadian military presence and the successful establishment of NATO Multinational Brigade in Latvia, led by Canada. "I am grateful for Canada's leadership in strengthening NATO's eastern flank and leading the NATO Multinational Brigade in Latvia," he said.
Rinkevics also assured that Latvia would continue to ensure full host nation support for the Allied Forces.
Later on Monday, Foreign Minister Baiba Braze (New Unity) will welcome the ministers of foreign affairs of the Baltic countries and Canada to Riga with a view to strengthening dialog and cooperation in areas of common interest in the 3+1 format.
Braze, Joly, Estonian Foreign Minister Margus Tsahkna, and Vice Foreign Minister of Lithuania Egidijus Meilunas will discuss topics on the current international agenda - transatlantic relations, support to Ukraine and constraining Russia, cooperation with the Indo-Pacific region, and relations with global partners.
The Foreign Ministry emphasizes that the visit by the Canadian foreign minister to Latvia evidences the close partnership with Canada as a transatlantic Ally having an indispensable role in the security of Latvia, the Baltic region and Europe.
Joly will also take part in an honors and awards ceremony to recognize the contribution of the Canadian soldiers to the mission while deployed overseas.
