RIGA - The Defense Ministry and the National Armed Forces should continue regular dialog with the public in order to prevent any disinformation campaigns, President Edgars Rinkevics stressed at a meeting with Saeima Defense, Internal Affairs and Corruption Prevention Committee Chairman Raimonds Bergmanis (United List) and the National Security Committee Chairman Ainars Latkovskis (New Unity) on Thursday.
According to the president's advisor Martins Dregeris, during the meeting the president and the ministers discussed the current situation on Latvia's eastern border and the importance of cooperation between Interior Ministry and the Defense Ministry in ensuring effective protection against the threat posed by Russia and Belarus.
A draft law on the establishment of anti-mobility infrastructure, approved by the Cabinet of Ministers and submitted to Saeima, was also discussed.
Rinkevics, Bergmanis and Latkovskis agreed on the importance of dialog with all stakeholders, in particular the heads and residents of the regions bordering Russia and Belarus, to explain the planned border reinforcement measures and their impact on private properties.
Rinkevics said that he was planning to visit the eastern border in late August to assess first-hand the progress in construction of infrastructure, implementation of technological solutions and military reinforcement of the border.
During the meeting, work on the 2025 state budget and defense spending was also discussed, said Dregeris.
