RIGA - The Corruption Prevention and Combating Bureau (KNAB) in November detained a person who had offered a bribe, worth more than EUR 1 million, to a police officer at the request of a company’s representative.

According to information released by KNAB, financial assets worth EUR 32,000,000 were frozen in a bank account of a legal entity as part of a probe conducted by the State Police.

A representative of the legal entity contacted a private individual, requesting to “resolve the issue” and get the freeze on the bank account off. The person, using a “go between”, contacted a State Police officer and offered him more than EUR 1 million as a bribe.

The police officer reported the attempt to bribe him to his superiors who alerted KNAB.

On November 9, the individual in question was detained as he was handing a part of the bribe - EUR 85,000 - to the police officer.

The case has now been forwarded to the prosecutor’s office for launching a criminal prosecution.
