RIGA - The coalition is moving forward on candidates for Bank of Latvia governor very rapidly, Prime Minister Evika Silina (New Unity) said on Monday after the weekly coalition meeting.
"We in the coalition have moved forward as regards the candidates that in our opinion could be nominated," the prime minister said, stressing that when there is clarity on a single candidate, it will be announced publicly.
Silina reiterated the criteria put forward by the coalition for the nomination of a candidate. The candidate must have an impeccable reputation and a vision for new financial services that would rapidly contribute to the growth of the Latvian economy. The coalition's candidate must be able to get to work immediately as the Bank of Latvia governor, representing Latvia in domestic politics and the market as well as representing the country internationally.
As reported, new candidates for the post of Bank of Latvia governor can be nominated until January 31.
New candidates have to be nominated because the first term of office of the previous Bank of Latvia governor Martins Kazaks ended on December 21, but the Saeima failed to elect his successor.
Bank of Latvia Deputy Governor Maris Kalis has been appointed the central bank's acting head until a new governor is elected.
