Close cooperation between EU and US is only way for sustainable global development - Karins

RIGA - The European Union (EU) and the United States are united by common democratic values and are the closest allies in issues important for world development and overcoming global challenges, the Prime Minister of Latvia Krisjanis Karins (New Unity) emphasized at a remote guest lecture at Stanford University in the United States on Wednesday.

As the Prime Minister's press secretary Sandris Sabajevs informed LETA, Karins emphasized that in order to ensure the sustainable development of the world, the EU and the United States must work closely together as large economies that share common values - freedom, democracy and the rule of law.

In his guest lecture, the Latvian Prime Minister noted that in today's world, no one can face global challenges alone - they must work together, and the EU and the United States, according to him, are natural allies.

In the guest lecture, the Prime Minister introduced the audience to the history of Latvia since its establishment after the First World War, the period of occupation after the Second World War and the restoration of national independence.

Karins also addressed the most important challenges, which require much closer cooperation between the EU and the United States - climate change, the establishment of a common international technology framework, ensuring free international trade, international security and the struggle to preserve the values of the democratic world for future generations.

According to Sabajevs, during the question and answer session, the Prime Minister explained Latvia's experience in the fight against the Covid-19 pandemic, the fight against disinformation, the regional security situation and the challenges of energy policy.

The guest lecture in remote mode was attended by more than 360 persons.
