RIGA - A child has died at the Children's Clinical University Hospital (BKUS), allegedly due to the fault of medical staff, and the State Police has opened criminal proceedings, Latvian Television reported last night.
According to Latvian Television, on November 26, an oncology patient who was being treated at BKUS allegedly received the wrong medication. The child died.
Zane Straume, a member of the Children's Hospital's board, confirmed that a high-risk patient safety incident occurred on November 26. The hospital is not disclosing the circumstances of the incident or whether the doctor in question is still working at the hospitl.
The Children's Hospital has launched an internal investigation which, as the Board Member explained, will not be swift.
Two days later, on November 28, the hospital reported the incident to the Health Inspectorate, which has not opened an inspection at this time as it is awaiting a submission from the parents.
The Children's Hospital also reported the incident to the State Police, which on December 5 opened criminal proceedings under Chapter 13 of the Criminal Code, namely for offenses against personal health.
According to the portal la.lv, an eight-year-old patient died. According to the information it has obtained, someone may have mixed the medication and administered potassium chloride instead of sodium chloride.
