Briskens to meet the new EU Commissioner for Transport and Tourism in Brussels on Tuesday

RIGA - On Tuesday, Latvian Transport Minister Kaspars Briskens (Progressives) will pay a working visit to Brussels to meet the new Commissioner for Transport and Tourism of the European Union (EU) and discuss current issues in the transport sector, including the implementation of the Rail Baltica project, representatives of the Transport Ministry informed LETA.

Briskens will meet with the new EU Commissioner for Transport and Tourism, Apostolos Tzitzikostas, to discuss the transport sector in Latvia and the EU, as well as the needs and challenges of the sector in view of the next EU multiannual financial period (2028-2034).

It is also planned to discuss the progress of the Rail Baltica project, including the government's decision on the priority tasks for the first phase of the project in Latvia.

During his visit, the Transport Minister is also scheduled to meet with the Director-General of the European Commission's Directorate-General for Regional and Urban Policy (DG REGIO), Themis Christophidou, to discuss the EU Cohesion Fund reallocation proposal for the Riga rail interconnected infrastructure.

Briskens will also meet Latvian MEPs and will open a debate organized by the European Economic and Social Committee on the use of the trans-European transport network (TEN-T).

The Minister will be accompanied on his working visit by the representatives of the Trasport Ministry, Latvijas Dzelzcels railway company and Eiropas Dzelzcela Linijas.
