RIGA - The Prosecutor's Office has annulled the decision of the Internal Security Bureau (IDB) recognizing the head of the State Border Guard, General Guntis Pujats, as a suspect, Pujats' lawyer Alla Jurasa told LETA.
The prosecutor's office has also lifted all security measures applied by the IDB, including a ban on holding the position of head of the border guard. This means that he can return to work.
With such a decision of the Prosecutor's Office, Pujats is automatically assigned the status of a person against whom criminal proceedings have been initiated.
The lawyer does not know the reasons for the prosecutor's decision, as nothing is mentioned in the prosecutor's statement.
Meanwhile, Beate Jonite, advisor to Interior Minister Sandis Girgens (KPV LV), told LETA that as soon as the Interior Ministry receives the official decision, Pujats will be re-instated to his post.
Asked whether the minister did not question the competence of the IDB after such a decision by the Prosecutor's Office, Jonite replied that the Prosecutor's Office supervises the criminal proceedings. If the Prosecutor's Office reports the IDB's lack of competence, "further decisions will follow on our part," she said.
As reported, the Border Guard Chief Pujats was detained last Thursday and released on Friday.
Pujats was initially deemed a suspect in a case associated with criminal actions in the construction of the Latvia-Russia border area.
