RIGA - Aluksne fire station renovation project has been completed for more than EUR 454,000 with the support from the US, the LETA learned from the US Embassy in Riga.

This project entailed the demolition of an existing, unused structure, and the construction of three new vehicle bays that feature automatic doors and a paved walkway outside the new building. The new three-bay building will not only shorten the response time for emergency calls, but also ensure that firefighting vehicles are protected from weather-related damage. The project was awarded to the Latvian construction company RCI Gulbene.

The US Embassy's Office of Defense Cooperation worked closely on the project with the Latvian Ministry of Interior's State Fire and Rescue Service (VUGD) and the US Army Corps of Engineers to implement the US European Command Civic Engagement funded project of over USD 515,000 (EUR 454,000).

The Aluksne Fire Station construction project is the 14th fire station renovation implemented by the US Embassy's Office of Defense Cooperation, the US Army Corps of Engineers, and the Latvian VUGD. Between 2009 and 2019, a total of 13 fire station renovations and construction projects were completed at Limbazi, Madona, Strenci, Gulbene, Valka, Aizkraukle, Livani, Keipene, Ventspils, Liepaja, Valmiera, Jelgava and Jekabpils fire stations. These projects represent more than USD 4 million of investment in VUGD's infrastructure as part of the US European Command Civic Engagement program.

In addition to the VUGD projects, ODC Latvia works closely with other governmental organizations such as the State Emergency Medical Service, regional municipalities, schools, senior citizen homes, and orphanages. Since 2007, ODC Latvia has completed more than 45 individual projects with more than USD 10 million (EUR 9 million) in direct investment to the local economy as a result of using local vendors, the embassy reported.

US Ambassador John Carwile and Minister of Interior Parliamentary Secretary Signe Bole will participate in a ribbon-cutting ceremony with Aluksne Mayor Arturs Dukulis and Deputy Chief of State Fire and Rescue Service General Intars Zitans to commemorate the completion of the Aluksne Fire Station renovation project on Wednesday, March 11.
